Spanish Exchange, Madrid 2019

4 December 2018

Year 9 and 10  Spanish Exchange Visit to Madrid 2018-2019

Dear Parent/Carer

Year 9 and 10  Spanish Exchange Visit to Madrid 2018-2019

I am planning this year’s exchange study visit to Spain for April 2019 for students currently studying Spanish in Year 9 and 10.  The Exchange is a fantastic chance for our students to enhance their GCSE Spanish studies at St Peter’s, and it would be an enriching opportunity.

The Exchange is made with students of the Jesús-María, Colegio Juan Bravo in Madrid, our Spanish link school.  St Peter’s students who choose to participate in the exchange visit will be carefully matched with a Spanish partner by teachers and will be put in touch with them, so that they can start corresponding early on by email or letter.  During the exchange visit to the Spanish capital, St Peter’s students will stay with their partner and their family.  The itinerary for the study visit will be focussed around learning more about our partner students, their school, language, city and culture.

The St Peter’s students will visit Madrid provisionally 23rd – 30th April.

The students from Jesús-María will make their visit to Exeter in June 2019, provisionally 6th – 13th June 2019.  During their stay here, the Spanish students will follow an itinerary of a combination of cultural visits and time spent in lessons at St Peter’s, together with the evenings and weekend spent with their St Peter’s host family.

A summary of our plan for the visit to Madrid is as follows:

  • A seven or eight day visit, the provisional dates being 23rd – 30th April. (Exact dates to be confirmed at the time of flight booking).
  • Return travel to Madrid will be by plane from Bristol Airport with Easyjet. Airport transfer from St Peter’s to Bristol, and back, will be by coach.
  • St Peter’s students will stay with their partner families.
  • All meals are included in the trip price.
  • We will spend at least two mornings touring our link school and attending lessons.
  • When not in lessons, the days will be spent enjoying cultural visits around the city of Madrid and to nearby places of interest, such as the beautiful city of Segovia. Day travel will be by coach, public bus and public underground.  All travel costs and entrance fees are included in the price of the trip.
  • The Spanish students will join us for some of our tourist visits.
  • The price of the visit is likely to be between £260 and £280. The final price depends on numbers and flight costs at the time of booking and will be confirmed in the next letter sent out after the holidays and after the flights have been booked.
  • Each participant will need a current passport. When completing the form attached, please write the participant’s name exactly as it appears on their passport.  It is essential that this is accurate for the booking of the flight ticket.  Any costs incurred due to incorrect information supplied will have to be met by the participant or their family.  If

your child does not have a passport yet, please still complete the consent form and return by the same date of 17th  December- this will enable us get the cheapest flight prices.

  • Each participant will also need a European Health Insurance Card, or EHIC. Details of how to obtain this are available at any Post Office or can be accessed at https://www.ehic.org.uk .  Please note that the card is free to obtain via this website and be wary that other sites may incur a charge for the service.  The EHIC card is not required immediately, but must be obtained by February 2019.
  • As everything is included in the price, spending money should be kept to a minimum and will be simply for souvenirs, presents and any food or drink that individuals want to buy beyond that provided.

Whilst we cannot allow students to be unaccompanied and alone in the city, there will be an opportunity during the visit schedule for shopping, when students will be accompanied to the shopping centre and allowed to spend some time in groups of four or more; there will then be a designated meeting time and place.  During excursions, too, participants will be allowed some time unaccompanied by an adult on the understanding that they are in groups of at least four and that staff have a mobile phone number to contact the group if necessary.

In order to take advantage of the current lower flight costs, I should appreciate it if you would make an initial deposit of £90.  This will be used towards the purchase of your child’s flight and, as such, is non-refundable.  Payment may be made by cheque (payable to Devon County Council).  This first payment of £90.00 should be made by Monday 17th December 2018. This will allow us to buy the flight tickets to the best possible price.  Please hand the cheque and attached consent form to the Finance office by the end of Monday, 17th December.

No refunds can be given for students withdrawing from the trip for other reasons and any costs incurred must be met by the student’s family.  It should also be clarified at this stage in the year that participation in the trip does depend on a positive behaviour record in College and approval by each student’s Head of Year.

There will be an information meeting next term, but if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me at the College by email: Gill.sims@spexe.org .

Yours faithfully.
