The Big Pedal Day 7
BIG PEDAL DAY 7
Every summer for the past 26 years, during Y10 residential week a group from St Peter’s have cycled unaided over 270 miles round Holland visiting two theme parks along the way. The eight day residential provides a perfect opportunity to experience life on the open road in a country that was simply designed for cyclists. Students cruise along the flat, safe cycle tracks and take in the unique rural scenery before setting up camp for the night and cooking their own scrumptious meal under the stars. Carrying everything on the back of the bikes there is a real sense of achievement at the end of the week.
Reflecting back on last year’s trip here are a few student memories relating to the senses!
Smell: Fresh bread as we cycled past the factory in between the straits of Bunschoten and Nijkerk, pine from the trees at the campsite at Baarn, farm yard smells!
Hear: Engine of the ferry, bike bells, screams on the roller coasters, birds in the trees singing early in the morning!
See: Windmills, Storks – huge, hedgehogs, canals, bikes galore! High speed trains!
Feel: Bike oil, wind, sunshine, suncream, sore legs, hot showers.
Taste: Stroop waffles, peanut butter and jam sandwiches, edam cheese!
