Year 11 – Update Letter
Following the recent news and Government announcements, I would like to update you as to the current situation for Year 11 students at St Peter’s. Whilst there are many uncertainties at present, I am hopeful that we as a school will be in receipt of more information shortly and I will share this as quickly as possible.
The announcement yesterday evening from the government made it clear that GCSE exams will not take place in May or June. As such I offer my sympathies to the Year 11 students, the vast majority of whom have worked exceptionally hard across a period of months and years in preparation for these. I recognise that the uncertainty around the way in which grades will be allocated is causing worry, I have had many conversations with students today around just what will be expected of them and how Further Education providers might respond to this scenario. As a school we will be on hand to offer support and guidance to Year 11 students to ensure they are not disadvantaged in any way, either now or in the future.
Aside from exams it is important to recognise that the sudden closure of schools for an undefined period also disrupts the usual plans for Year 11 leavers. It is too early at present to confirm arrangements for the Summer term, however please rest assured that the Prom will take place in some format, whether that be on the pre-arranged date or at some time later in the year. Work on the Year Book has already started and students will be able to submit their comments to be added to this via an online form. Details will be available via email shortly after Easter. Lastly, leavers hoodies; many thanks to those who have already placed an order. The deadline for this is tomorrow morning (Friday 20th March).
The arrangements for tomorrow, Friday 20th March, have been shared with your child this afternoon. Year 11 students are expected to attend school as normal, in school uniform from 8.30am. Students will go to lesson one and two as usual. At the end of break time, students should go to their tutor bases. There they will spend 25 minutes with their tutors and tutor groups, before gathering in the courtyard for food and refreshments, kindly prepared by Mr Green and his team. Students will have the opportunity during this time to socialise within the year group and will then finish school at 1pm.
Unfortunately there are a number of Year 11 students who have been self-isolating this week due to having symptoms or a family member with symptoms of Covid-19. If this is the case for your child, please ensure they remain at home since the need to self-isolate will remain. Any children attending school tomorrow who have given self-isolation as a reason for absence this week will be sent home immediately.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Year 11 students for being a fantastic year group throughout their time at St Peter’s. It has been my privilege to lead them and I remain incredibly proud of the things they have achieved. Whilst I will see them again collectively at the Year 11 prom/leavers celebration; whenever this might be, I would like to extend my best wishes to each of them for a happy and healthy future. As parents I offer my sincere thanks for the support you have shown your child, our school and me personally during the last five years.
Mrs K. Hayes
Head of Year 11
