Year 10 GCSE English

7 February 2019

revision guide letter 2019 yr 10

Dear Year 10 Parent

We are writing to let you know about your son/daughter’s GCSE English Literature texts for Year 11 and to offer you the possibility of purchasing English Language and English Literature revision guides through the school.

English Literature Set Texts

Students have already studied Macbeth by William Shakespeare in the Autumn term. Students will need to revisit this text before the summer exams next year. We will be completing some revision on this text in class, however students will need to reread it in their own time as well. This term students are studying poems from the Power and Conflict Anthology as well as preparing for the questions on the Unseen Poetry section of the Literature exam.

Later this year students will be studying An Inspector Calls for their modern text and in Year 11 A Christmas Carol for their novel study. The school will provide copies of the text for all students to use in class and in their own time, however it may be helpful for your child to have their own copy so they are able to make notes in the text.

Copies of all of these texts can be purchased from most book retailers and also online. The editions we use in school are as follows:

Macbeth – Cambridge School Shakespeare ISBN 1107615496

An Inspector Calls – Heinemann ISBN 0435232826

A Christmas Carol – ISBN 1853261213

Revision guides for English Language and English Literature

In English literature students will have to be able to analyse short passages, relate these extracts to the whole text and understand how characters and themes are developed through each text. They will need to learn some key quotations as no copies of texts are allowed in the exams. In English language students will have to analyse unseen extracts from fiction and non-fiction sources, as well as write both fiction and non-fiction texts.

If you would like further details of what these exam questions are like, there is more information on the AQA specification on the AQA website:

https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/english/gcse/english-language-8700

http://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/english/gcse/english-literature-8702

There are study and revision guides available for each text and for other elements of the GCSE English language and literature exams which you may wish to purchase through school for a slightly reduced rate compared to the RRP. You do not need to purchase any or all of these guides, and you may prefer to buy alternative guides or buy guides online or in bookstores. There will be more opportunities to purchase these in Yr 11. Details and prices of the guides we are offering are on the order form.

Please complete the form and return to the Finance Office by Monday 11th of February if you wish to take advantage of this offer.

We appreciate your support in this matter.

Best wishes,

Kathy Hamilton
