Dear Parents

The History department have arranged an enrichment excursion to help support the delivery of the new GCSE syllabus.  GCSE students will have the opportunity to take part in an overnight stay in London on Thursday 2nd July until Friday 3rd July 2020.  Below is an outline of the expected itinerary for the trip*:

Thursday 2nd July 2020

07.00: Students depart St Peter’s Church of England Aided School by coach. Please bring suitable food to sustain them until evening.

12.00: Hampton Court Palace -As part of the specified GCSE History course, students will get the opportunity to take part in a self-guided tour of the palace. Students will gain an insight into the life of the Tudors and a place which was an integral part of Elizabeth’s reign. It was a place where she was kept prisoner under the rule of her sister Mary, the place she was in attendance on hearing about the Spanish Armada and a place full of lavish Tudor entertainment. Students will have access to the house and gardens and will use the time to both learn and enjoy their packed lunches.

14.00: The Science Museum – New Medicine Galleries – To help support the study of the new unit: Britain the Health and the Nation. Students will tour the newly refurbished medicine galleries which include a variety of artefacts and information from the History of medicine over the last 2000 years. https://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/see-and-do/medicine-wellcome-galleries

17:00: Evening Meal at Byron Burgers

19.30: Performance of Romeo and Juliet – Supporting both historical understanding of life in Elizabethan England and the current English Literature text. Students will get to experience what a Shakespeare play is like performed how it would have been done at the time. Students will get to stand in the famous pit of the Globe whilst enjoying a familiar text and the atmosphere of the world-famous Globe Theatre.

22.00: Return to London 3 star hotel. Students will be staying in a Premier Inn Hotel with twin rooms and all the facilities you would expect from televisions, en-suite and tea and coffee provided.

Friday 3rd July 2020

08.30: Premier Inn Breakfast at the Hotel

10:00: Old Operating Theatre – To support the Britain Health and the People paper which requires pupils to understand the changes to surgery through history, students will enter one of Europe’s oldest surviving operating theatres and experience a reconstruction of an operation before the arrival of anaesthesia and antiseptics. This will help students in identifying the problems that existed in surgery before the discovery of antiseptics and anaesthetics, and enable pupils to understand the significance of these developments

12:00: The Golden Hinde – As part of the paper two Elizabeth unit students are required to understand the impact of naval voyages and battles. To help support this students get to tour the infamous Golden Hinde Ship.  They will experience the life of a 16th century explorer aboard the Golden Hinde, a full-sized reconstruction of the ship Sir Francis Drake used to circumnavigate the globe between 1577-8.

Packed lunches are provided for the day.

15:00: London Dungeons – To help prepare students for Britain Health and the Nation students will get to explore the nature crime and disease in London at the time of the Great Plague. Students will get to walk the streets of the plague invested London in 1665, experience the Great Fire of London which helped remove the plague, understand the sights and smells associated with overcrowding and poor public health. Watch the work of surgery in the Middle Ages and understand why it was such a dangerous procedure for all involved

17.00: Depart London for return journey

Students will need to ensure they have enough food to sustain them for the journey home – there will be a service station stop en-route

22:00: Estimated time of arrival at St Peter’s Church of England Aided School (traffic permitting)

* Although students will cover everything mentioned in this itinerary, the order may be subject to change.

As this is an additional enrichment activity, and not a required element of the GCSE subjects, the school will have to charge each student who wishes to attend £195. The price includes all travel to, around and from London, an overnight stay in a 3* London hotel, dinner at Byron Burger, Tickets to the Globe Theatre, entry to the Old Operating Theatre, entry to the London Dungeons, a guided visit of the Golden Hind, entry to Hampton Court Palace, breakfast at the hotel and a packed lunch for Friday.

Due to the timing we will require a £55 deposit to be paid by Wednesday 26th February 2020 and full payment to be paid by 15th May 2020. Students in receipt of pupil premium should contact the school to see if additional support can be made available. Parents are advised to pay the deposit of £55 by cash or cheque, made payable to Devon County Council, in the first instance and given into the Finance Office.  Once the trip numbers are confirmed payment by schoolcomms will be made available.

There are limited spaces available for the trip and therefore if you would like your child to go on this trip, please return the slip below to the Finance Office as soon as possible before Wednesday 26th February 2020. In the event of being oversubscribed we will have to take names out of a hat. This will take place after the submission date.
