And We’re Off…
Our new group of Ten Tors trainees took to Dartmoor this weekend for the first of many training walks. The weather was perfect, almost too perfect, and we only hope it hasn’t given a false impression of what conditions are usually like on the wildest parts of Devon!
We met bright and early, arriving in Princetown for a 9 a.m. start. Our equilateral triangle route, heading east, south, then north, covered 13.18 km, which proved just the right distance to ease the staff back in and introduce our trainees to the season ahead.
The students did exceptionally well. We were impressed by their spirit and teamwork, as well as by their map reading skills, which led us successfully around the route.
Our walk also allowed us to explore some of Dartmoor’s rich history, including the old tin workings at Whiteworks and the Devonport Leat tunnel near Nun’s Cross Farm (formerly owned by St Peter’s School, previously known as Hele’s School). Along the way, we practised key navigation and expedition skills such as pacing over 100 m distances, timing, river crossings, and more.
Come rain or shine, we’ll be out there, and we look forward to the training ahead and to sharing our adventures with you all.

Ten Tors Manager
