What a Difference Six Hours Makes (Without Rain)

On 31st January, we set off from Postbridge following a prolonged spell of heavy rain, fully expecting swollen rivers and the boggiest ground Dartmoor could offer. With recent conditions in mind, we prepared for a demanding day underfoot.

Instead, we were pleasantly surprised.

Our route followed the East Dart upstream towards Sittaford Tor before continuing on to Kes Tor and across to Fernworthy Reservoir Dam. Despite the volume of recent rainfall, the moor had drained remarkably well. The river was running high but contained, and although there were soft sections along the way, the ground was far firmer than anticipated.

Near Sittaford Tor, Mr Pounds discovered a baby adder — a notable find and a reminder that the seasons are beginning to shift. As the day progressed, the weather continued to improve, rewarding us with blue skies and several well-defined rainbows across the valley.

The circular route back to Postbridge covered approximately 20 kilometres, providing a steady and enjoyable day on the moor. What we had expected to be a wet and testing outing instead proved to be another rewarding walk under unexpectedly favourable conditions.

Well done to everyone involved for another strong effort.
