Spring Steps
Blue skies and sunshine accompanied us across Dartmoor last weekend (20th-22nd March), making for some truly pleasant walking conditions. As night fell, those clear skies revealed stunning views of the stars, though they brought with them a noticeable chill.
Students camped on both Friday and Saturday night, striking tents each morning before moving on. Saturday saw teams cover 24km, gaining 723m of elevation walking in a clockwise loop. They picked up the heights of Belstone Tor, Cosdon Hill, Hangingstone Hill, Great Kneeset and Dinger Tor to mention a few before re-pitching camp in the evening and repeating their cooking routines for dinner and breakfast.
On Sunday, teams set off once more, heading in a southerly then easterly direction, picking up Oke, Steeperton and Watern Tor. Crossing the North Teign River at Manag Rails and Scorhill Down and finishing past Shilstone Tor at the quarry completing a further 20km and climbing an additional 454m.
Our 45-mile team, building on their experience from previous years, completed the same routes with added checkpoints to help prepare for the increased distance and pacing required on the event itself.
A huge thank you to all the staff who supported what is always a more logistically challenging training weekend.
Finally, well done to all the students, who looked after themselves and each other throughout. The attitude and discipline on display from start to finish is something we are incredibly proud to be part of.
Well done, crew.
