World Book Night
BackNews - 15th May 2026

Thank you to the reading ambassadors for their expert help throughout the evening and thank you to all the parents and carers who supported our first World Book Night. We had a very enjoyable evening engaging in an array of reading for pleasure related activities.
The evening began with an opportunity to browse the library stock and book blankets, whilst also indulging in a selection of tasty treats kindly provided by parents, students and staff.
Following a brief presentation about the importance of reading for pleasure, and a summary of St Peter’s reading for pleasure endeavours, we extended the staff reading challenge to families. Not all the books in the challenge will be appropriate for all ages, so parents will need to be discerning, but reading alongside your child, and engaging in informal book talk about what you are reading, is a powerful way to deepen connections between you and your loved ones, support mental health and well-being and improve your child’s academic success. An updated version of the challenge will be shared with parents and carers soon.

One of the most enjoyable and beneficial portions of the evening was the read aloud. Head of English, Kathy Hamilton, expertly read the opening of Dragonborn by Struan Murray keeping everyone captivated by the promise of secrets and adventure!
After the read aloud, we appreciated the opportunity to immerse ourselves in a good book. Younger attendees went into a separate room where the reading ambassadors took it in turns to read to the other children. The young people had lots of fun choosing books, exploring them and discussing what they were reading. he older children and adults were thankful for a rare opportunity to relax in our fantastic library whilst reading silently together. At the end of the evening, we all came together to enjoy some informal book talk and recommendations before departing.
Feedback about the evening was overwhelmingly positive with attendees appreciating the range of activities, the opportunity to visit the library and to read with their children in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Keep an eye out on school social media for future events.
